Essential Oils

As most of you know, I love to share tips, ideas, and suggestions for improving health.  One of my most recent discoveries has been essential oils.  I had been exposed to them years ago in the first practice I was a part of, but never did a lot with them.  Over the last year there has been a major movement toward utilizing essential oils for a variety of uses.  It peaked my interest again, and so I started doing some homework.

Most essential oils have many benefits.  They range from helping with mood, hyperactivity, and anxiety, to skin disorders, wrinkles, illness, and disease.  Applications of the oils can be aromatic, topical and ingested.

Like many natural products, you get what you pay for.  The process by which the oils are extracted makes a difference in the purity.  The cheaper the oil is to purchase, the more of it you will have to use to get the desired effect.

I am hosting an oil 101 class that I would love for any of you interested in finding out more about the benefits of these natural products to attend.  The class will be at our office, at 10am, on April 11th.  Space will be limited for this class, so it is important to email me asap to reserve your spot.  This invite is also extended to anyone you may know that would be interested in learning more about these oils.

Bring a guest and you will be entered to win a $50 oil gift package!  Please let us know that you'll be bringing a guest in your email.

Can't attend on the 11th?  There will be a class in May, so email to confirm your spot for that class (date is TBD).

Total wellness care

Did you brush your teeth today?
I bet you have brushed your teeth at least once today.
What have you done for your spinal health in the last month? A lot like brushing your teeth keeps your mouth healthy, adjustments keep your spine healthy!

Chiropractic care can help prevent injuries and keep your
joints functioning properly.

Getting your spine checked 3-4 times per year can be all it
takes to keep away stiffness and achiness.

Regular monthly care has even more benefits:

- Improved immune function (you get sick less often)
- Improved physical and mental function
- Improved flexibility
- Regulated sleep cycles

Schedule before April 1st, 2015 and we'll make sure you get a chance to try out our new rapid release massage technology at no additional charge!

Kids and sugar

We can do better!
Each day the food choices you make affect your health, but have you thought about the effects to those around you? Young children eat what their parents feed them.  I challenge you to find ways to add vegetables to your diet each day.
Below are some suggestions:

Add spinach, kale, broccoli, and/or mushrooms to scrambled eggs in the morning.  Prepare this ahead of time by baking the scrambled mixture in muffin cups, rather than cooking in a pan, for a quick breakfast.  You can even freeze the "muffins" and set out the night before so you'll be set for the morning.

Try a grilled or sautéed veggie wrap for lunch.  Add hummus for even more flavor!

Smoothies!  This is the easiest way to add vegetables any time of day.  One of my go-to's for my daughters is:
2 cups organic spinach (frozen or fresh)
1 small organic apple
1/2 cup frozen mango
splash of orange juice
add water to gain desired consistency

Get creative!  With a great blender the sky's the limit.  Carrots, peas, kale, cucumber, beets... there are a plethora of websites devoted to recipes for smoothies.  Be sure to look for ones with vegetables, and not just fruit!!

Lightly steam, lightly sauté, grill, or lightly broil vegetables to bring out their flavor and keep nutrients in.  Boiling robs the vegetables of most of their nutrients and flavor.

Try a veggie dinner.  Cut up bit sized pieces of your favorite veggies, toss them in olive oil and a favorite seasoning (avoid the salt), and bake them for 5 minutes.  Dip in hummus or toss with gluten free pasta for a power packed end to your day!

It's Been A While!

It's Been A While!!

How was your 2014?  What goals did you accomplish?  How was your health?  What about your fitness level?

The first few weeks of January always seem to hold so much promise and hope for what the coming year will bring.  Many of us say “This will be the year I ____.”  How many times has February rolled around, only to find that we let those promising first weeks of January slowly slip by?

If you are finding yourself making health goals for 2015, how will you set yourself up for success?  What were some of the pitfalls that may have kept you from reaching your goals previously?

I want to be your partner as you embark down the path toward improving your health!

I am frequently asked why I do community based health education programs.  My simple answer is always: My purpose is to help as many people as possible!  Our society is at a critical and concerning tipping point.

-  For the first time in history, school age children have a lower life expectancy than their parents.  This means that many of you will live longer than your children.

-  For over 10 years health experts have been using the term “The sickest generation” when referencing our children.  In those 10 years little has changed in the overall health status of these children.

-  Pharmaceutical drug dependency is at an all time high.  According to the CDC, 120 people die each day from prescription drug overdose.

-  In males, breast cancer is becoming the number one cancer surpassing that of prostate cancer because of overall obesity levels.  Males being overweight causes a whole smorgasbord of side effects:  low testosterone, sexual dysfunction, low libido, lethargy, muscle atrophy, continual weight gain, and increased risks of heart attacks and cancers.

These issues start with improving the health status of individuals.  I am part of a growing number of health practitioners who are deeply concerned about these alarming trends and we’re tackling these issues head on!

Our services include: Hormone Replacement Therapy (testosterone, progesterone, estrogen), medical weight loss, chiropractic care, therapeutic exercises, more.

Please email me with a simple “Help me get healthy!”, drtharnish@gmail.com. Together we can make 2015 your best year yet!!

Healthfully yours,
